Yoga is therapy! Yes, that's right. It will make you feel better, think better and have a better life. I know these are bold claims but they are absolutely true because I speak from experience.
I first came across yoga when I was 9 years old. I had been a selective mute for most of my childhood and my mother was taking me to see a speech therapist so that I could overcome my inability to speak. I won't go into too much detail here, but she taught me the yoga sequence Salute to the Sun as part of my treatment and I remember the feeling of moving my body with my breath and how that had a calming effect on me. I'm not saying that learning that yoga sequence was the only thing that helped me overcome my anxiety and inability to talk, but it definitely helped in the process and planted a seed that was to flourish later in my life.
I came across yoga a second time when I was 20 years old. At the time I was into all night dance parties, taking recreational drugs, and was a complete sugar addict! My parents had an interest in starting yoga and so I suggested that I see if there were any places locally where they could go. I found a yoga school near where we lived and went to a class to see what it was like and that's when everything changed. I found my body and my breath again. What started out as a research mission for my parents, turned into a life changing experience for me. I stopped taking the drugs and eating the sugar but I couldn't quite give up the all night dance parties just yet, although I did eventually.
Fast forward to today, and it's been over 20 years since I found those classes. I've tried a few different styles of yoga over the years but I keep coming back to the one style that I discovered when I was 20, and the reason is because it works! It helps me on so many levels and what I love the most is that now I can share the benefits of that yoga with others. It's a great feeling to know that people who come to my classes walk out feeling amazing and with smiles on their faces, and what's even better, is they keep coming back. Every class I teach is different, just like every student that walks through my door is different. I'm hoping you'll come through that door soon and discover for yourself the healing potential of a yoga class. Movement and breath is all it takes!
